McKesson Horizon Series
Part 1 - Time & Contract
It’s not a good feeling. As the CIO of multi-faceted health system that is currently using McKesson’s HORIZON© suite of applications throughout your system, you’re now faced with a decision, a myriad of decisions actually.
The coffee in your “World’s Best (you fill in the blank)” mug has grown cold again. You’ve been studying the papers on your desk, one piece of paper in particular… As you pick up the letter from McKesson, the IT equivalent of a Dear John letter, you can’t help but think that it just seemed like yesterday that you had finished the Go-live of the final hospital, that quaint little 80-bed facility in the farthest reaches of your health network, and now, more decisions loom, more projects to plan.
Chances are, you’ve been discussing this day, but it’s time to stop procrastinating and begin developing a strategy for moving forward. Let’s take a moment and review some considerations that you should include in formulating your EMR plans beyond McKesson’s HORIZON® applications.
Do Not Delay This Painful and Tedious Task Any Longer
The sooner you initiate a plan, the more likely the transition will be successful. First of all, read that letter one more time. What’s the “lights off” date listed in the letter? Take that date and begin to flesh out your timeline, working backwards, and identify how much time you have, and remember how long the HORIZON® project took to fully implement. Hindsight is a most accurate measurement, there’s no gray area in how long that project took to complete, and this time is important in applying to the time you have before HORIZON applications are no longer supported.
Read You Original HORIZON Contract
Now, before you dismiss this as a complete waste of time, consider that when your facility signed the contract, there may have been additions, concessions and commitments that were long ago forgotten, and there could be some leverage buried in the legal jargon that will benefit your organization.
