A Jacksonville company has been rated near the top on Inc. magazine’s list of the fastest-growing companies in the country.
The HCI Group has grown 24,545 percent in the past three years, putting it at No. 3 on Inc.’s 5000 list, which was released Tuesday.
Greg Jones and his brother-in-law Ricky Caplin formed the company in 2009, providing IT consulting to the health care industry. Jones, the president, said that while HCI is not in the software business, it does work with hospitals to install new electronic records systems.
That first year, it had just the two employees and total revenue of $103,475. Now it’s grown to about 160 employees and had a revenue last year of $25.5 million.
Only 50 employees are in the company’s headquarters on Southpoint Parkway. The rest, Jones said, are scattered around the country on the job. A large project, he said, may take 20 people a couple of years if they’re working with a health care system with multiple hospitals.
Jones said he expects the growth to continue.
“We’ve managed to maintain it this year,” he said. “Now that we’re in with a lot of clients, we want to expand to other services for them.”
HCI has already done some international work in the United Kingdom (Jones is Welsh, Caplin is from Jacksonville) and the Mideast, but Jones said he wants to become more global.
Inc. has been publishing its annual list of fastest-growing companies since 1982, though it started as the Inc. 500. Now it’s grown to 5,000 companies.
Other Jacksonville-area companies on it are NTE Solutions of St. Augustine, 213; North Florida Field Services, 240; ShayCore Enterprises, 264; Colo5, 394; Go Auto Recycling, 403; Dream Finders Homes, Orange Park, 640; JWB Real Estate Capital, 938; R2 Logistics, 1276; Brightway Insurance, 1345; G2 ID Source, 1512; Healogics, 1539; Align Networks, 2219; Denali Group, 2268; The Building IT Co, 2283; Foundation Financial Group, 2512; Sourcing Interests Group, 3740; CTI Resource Management Services, 3740; Pinnacle Insurance, 4292, Florida East Coast Railway, 4940.
Topping the list is Fuhu, the California-based creator of an Android tablet for children, and Fooz Kids, an Adobe application to make computers kid-friendly. Its sales have grown from $279,000 to $117.9 million in three years, a jump of 42,148 percent.
