5 Must-Have Tools for Achieving EMRAM Stage 7

Your goal is to reach EMRAM Stage 7. You’ve selected the technology to achieve that goal. Now it’s time to consider what tools you’re going to use to assess and monitor your alignment with the HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 award criteria.

1. Gap Analysis for Achieving HIMSS Stage 7

After your system go-live, you will need to perform an initial gap analysis to find out where the shortfalls are in your system. Use gap analysis to analyze the risks and barriers, and then decide what priorities need to be fixed, to enable your organization to move onto EMRAM Stage 7. Following the gap analysis, you should review your findings and go back to fix the problems and optimize. Gap analysis is also a useful tool in finalizing a plan to get to HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7.

2. Executive Reporting and Transparency

Having transparency in executive reporting is important in your institution’s journey to EMRAM Stage 7. As we mentioned in 3 Key Milestones to HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7, having organizational buy-in is essential for success in reaching stage 7. Executive reporting and transparency across key stakeholders will help reach your goals as you outline what’s working, what’s not working and what steps need to be taken. It will also keep your own department/team on schedule, given that you may need to explain every step and reason to your executive board during the process.

3. HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 Guide Book

One invaluable tool is the HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 Guide Book. You should keep the guide book with you at all times and refer to it for everything. It will make a great partner in your EMRAM journey. Likewise, it will help you with any organizational push back you experience during this process, and in your executive reporting. The book is objective; it simply tells you and the rest of your organization how to make things better.

4. Scorecards

Other useful tools, like the initial gap analysis and developing scorecards, will help you continually assess how you are aligned with the HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 criteria. Create scorecards to test your progress against, and present them in a way that makes the actions needed pivotal to what your organization needs to execute to get to Stage 7. Also, have this expectation set at each department/campus within your organization to see the success rolled out across your organization. You can then use the scorecards to develop a formal report to assure you are on target.

5. Mock Surveys

Finally, mock surveys are your last must-have tool. Once you have your gap analysis as outlined in point 1 of this post, mock surveys will be instrumental in performance improvement. Mock surveys can help you approach fixing an issue in your system by focusing on where the issue is, and showing you how to address it and implement the necessary changes. These Mock surveys will measure your success and progress, as well as your readiness for the real assessment.
